I met a new friend for drinks at the Ace Hotel in Flatiron on Friday night. At 7pm, the place was already busy with trendy, cool people, many of which were busily typing away on their laptops at the long community style wooden tables. The room is large, but dark and the lights dimmed even more as we sat. It feels comfortable and inviting, but also very upscale. It’s a fun combination. We were able to find two oversized arm chairs and ordered vodka sodas with lime to start. After a few hours, our stomachs started to grumble and it was time for some food.
The food comes from The Breslin, located within the hotel. The waitress recommended the scrumpets and I was instantly intrigued. The rustic feel of the whole place translated into the presentation of the food.
The scrumpet is shredded lamb meat which is then breaded and fried. Definitely not a dish for the health conscious. The meat actually melts in your mouth. It was so unexpected and the sweet mint vinegar on the side gave the perfect little a bite of acidity. These were the perfect little finger food.
Next, the grilled cheese.
I love a good grilled cheese. But rarely have I seen it accompanied with sides before. It was fun to be able to make the sandwich my own. The sweet onion relish was so yummy on the creamy, crunchy sandwich. The cheese was just oozing out. It was pure gooey perfection. The mustard on the side was so delicious. I love mustard (hate ketchup) so the combination was great.
The whole meal, and company, were wonderful. It was such a unique place, totally off my normal radar of restaurants and culinary adventures. Perfect for a day of work, or night of fun.
