Fred’s

Spring is finally here.  Outdoor cafes are alive and tank tops are finally dusted off from my closet.  My friends left my apartment by noon and this was not a day to be spent indoors.  Rocking a tank top and flip flops, book in hand, I headed on a quest for brunch.  My original plan was to head back up to Isabella’s, but I realized as a new blogger, it is my responsibility to be a bit more adventurous.  Walking up Amsterdam, I had my eyes set on Fred’s.  I have been here for a delicious dinner before, and decided it was time to try their brunch.  Luckily, the wait was only 15 minutes for a table outside “with the pigeons and garbage,” according to Josh Brolin’s SNL opening monologue.  I went inside to sit at the bar while waiting for my outdoor table.  I enjoyed a mimosa and Jack Kennedy to start.

The place is adorable.  It is decorated with tons of pictures of dogs all over the walls.  It is named after a seeing eye dog and the theme sticks to the love for dogs.

Finally, the waiter came in and escorted me to my curbside table.  I kept contemplating what to finally order.  I asked for some advice, and ended up deciding to order my typical go-to these days; smoked salmon scramble.  The meal comes with complimentary mimosa (or bloody) and coffee.  It was too hot a day for coffee, so the sparkling drink was perfect and refreshing.

They brought out a basket of muffins with strawberry butter to start.

At first glance, I thought they were blueberry muffins.  My first bite proved my initial thought wrong.  Chocolate Chip!! I was so surprised and the muffins were delicious and warm.  The strawberry butter just melted with the sweet chocolatey goodness.

A few pages and minutes later, my main dish arrived.

(Eggs, Cream Cheese, Smoked Salmon, Dill, Potato Cake, and Mesclun Salad with Carrots)

I dove right in.  The eggs were delicious, a bit less creamy then my usual scramble, but it reminded me of a fancier version of something I would concoct at home.  I love the idea of feeling as if I’m eating a great bagel with cream cheese and lox, but instead of a bagel, the eggs serve as my vehicle for enjoyment.  I sprinkled some kosher salt on the potatoes (salt is my awful weakness) and enjoyed the meal and good read.  I sat at Fred’s basking in the sun for over an hour, making some serious damage on my book and the food.  The waiters were so nice and pleasant and my book title even helped to spark their conservation about famous people to name their kids.

I finished my meal, paid the bill and with book in hand headed to Central Park to continue my relaxing day of reading and fun.

The scramble at Fred’s was really great, but I have to say, in the scramble department Isabella’s won for its overall melt in your mouth creamy texture.  But I still love Fred’s especially for the warm decor, muffins and wonderful wait staff.  Their dinner is fabulous, especially the Strahan Salad named after the famous Giants player’s meal right before a Superbowl win.  How awesome is that?  Make your way up to Fred’s.  It will not disappoint.
