Hummus Place

Some cravings cannot be suppressed.

After a Memorial Day BBQ filled with steak sandwiches, baked beans, corn salad and tons of fabulous sangria, Leigh and I made our way back to Manhattan to recoup.  Our family meal finished early in the day, so when 9 o’clock rolled around, we were hungry for dinner.  The craving for hummus took over us both and we ventured down the street.  We were hoping to stop at SoomSoom, but the dark windows told us otherwise.  We walked down Amsterdam to Hummus Place, an underground Mediterranean delight.

I had acquired a LivingSocial coupon there during the month of March, experiencing and enjoying their easy take-out.  Although my coupons had long run out, I have continually been back.  I knew the food was good, but I had never had the full experience.  It was just as good, if not better.

We were seated immediately, being some of the few people eating out on this festive holiday.  We sat in the back corner and contemplated what to order.  They have a wonderful deal with 3 appetizers and pita for $9.99.  There are approximately 8 options, making it a difficult decision.

Leigh and I eventually settled on the babaganoush, falafel and hummus with whole chickpeas.  We also felt a little wild and added the Health Salad, which to us is an Israeli Salad.  They offer whole wheat pitas, which makes the meal even healthier.

Everything is delicious.

(Tomato, Cucumber, Red Onion, Parsley, Olive Oil)

I have a weakness for their health salad, which is light and fresh with the touch of parsley and olive oil.  This dish, packed with so much flavor, gives just the right level of full.

The hummus transports you back to days sitting by the Mediterranean, with the whole pieces of chick peas adding further texture to a classic dish.  Dipping it into the warm pita creates a wonderfully light bite full of flavor.

Chunks of eggplant make up the babaganoush, unlike so many other places having non-authentic versions of one of my favorite dips.

The tangy and creamy sauce on the side elevates the falafel into a whole new realm.  I found myself even dipping the pita into the sauce on the side then adding bits of the falafel.  Leigh used most of the aspects on our table, creating a falafel sandwich with the pita, hummus and some health salad.  It was the perfect amount of food.

When the bill came, with tax and tip, it cost us $20 combined!  It’s totally a steal and the quality of food makes a trip to Hummus Place even more worth it.  With three locations in the city, there really is no excuse not to check it out.  Trust me; you’ll be going back for more.

XO,

G
