My sister Amanda is a macaron aficionado. It’s her dessert of choice, and any time I see them in a store throughout Manhattan, I pick up a variety to bring home for her to try. So after brunch in the East Village, as we walked down 8th Street, she practically screamed. Amanda ran across the street to the simple, white awning of Macaron Parlour.
We entered inside to what could only be described as Amanda’s dream.
Amanda seemingly drooled on the tower, asking the girl working behind the counter one million questions. She was especially intrigued by the gigantic macaron at the top of the tower which was described as an ice cream sandwich with two macaron cookies as the outside. It was pure heaven.
We then started to stare at the glass display, which reminded us of an ice cream parlor.
The bright colors were blinding, and different flavors unlike anything we had ever seen before. The flavor ranged from classical combinations, such as Peanut Butter Cup, to absolutely absurd concoctions like Cheetos. We bought a box of six macarons, but the difficult problem was deciding which ones to try!
Ultimately, we opted for:
1. Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Filling
2. Elvis – Peanut Butter & Caramelized Bananas
3. Party Time – Salted Milk Chocolate & Dulche De Leche
4. Caramel Fleur De Sel – Salted Caramel Butter Cream
5. Peanut Butter Cup – Dark Chocolate & Creamy Peanut Butter Filling
6. S’Mores – Brown Sugar & Honey Shell with Dark Chocolate & Marshmallow Creme
Amanda and I brought our treats home for dessert when we were a bit more hungry. We nibbled on each one, loving each bite. She was kind enough to share, and after a few little bites, declared these the best macarons in the city, surpassing the likes of La Maison du Chocolate (in 30 Rock) and Sugar & Plumm.
Her birthday is in 2 months, and I easily know what going to be making its way back to New Jersey.
So if you, like my sweet Amanda, have a total weakness for Macarons, do yourself a favor and head to the East Village for a some of the most unique variations of the classic dessert you will ever try. And trust me, if it’s Amanda approved, then it’s definitely great.
