Donna Bell’s Bake Shop

Finding good breakfast food in Midtown West is a near impossible task.  Whenever I commute from my parents house in New Jersey, I find myself at Port Authority, stomach grumbling with time to kill before walking the 10 blocks and 2 avenues to work.  Finding something delicious is near impossible.  Or so I thought.

Thanks to my handy-dandy FourSquare (which I trust far more then Yelp to solve this kind of problem, I discovered the charming Donna Bell’s Bake Shop on the corner of 49th and 8th.  The sweet scent of buttery biscuits fill your lungs when you walk inside.  The display case is enough to send you into a gluttonous overdrive.

Their main speciality are the fluffy biscuits, in varieties like Cheddar with Pimento and Chives that will knock your socks off.

The main draw, or at least my cause for visiting, was transforming one of their delicious buttermilk biscuits into a breakfast sandwich.  You have a choice of breakfast meats; sausage, ham, veggie patty or turkey to pair with eggs and cheddar cheese.  Since I’m typically a bacon girl, I asked for advice about what meat worked best.  The ham seemed to be the clear winner, and my choice for the morning.

There’s no seating inside, so grab your brown paper bag and coffee and skip to work.  (the skipping part is optional).  I sat down at my desk, unwrapped the tinfoil to reveal the gigantic, buttery breakfast sandwich.

Ridiculously good doesn’t give this breakfast sandwich enough justice.  First of all, the buttery biscuit is insane.  It’s light, flakey and slightly sweet.  And inside the slightly charred piece of ham is juicy and meaty.  The egg and cheese bring everything together for this breakfast that will keep you full well through the day.

The next time you find yourself getting off a bus at Port Authority, or if you happen to live near Hell’s Kitchen and have no idea where to go for a quick breakfast, now you know.  Donna Bell’s Bake Shop.  Know it.  Love it.  It will make your morning commute just a little bit brighter.
