In a city where healthy food rules supreme and fad diets make their way onto every menu, one Santa Monica favorite defies all the rules. Bay Cities Italian Deli is a classic. Prepared foods, fresh Italian pasta, glass displays filled with cheese and plastic containers filled with homemade sauces and pesto. But that’s not why you are here. You have come to meet the Godmother. And she is a delicious sandwich.
Five different varieties of meat, along with provolone cheese and “the works” (a genius mixture of Mayo, Dijon Mustard, Onions, Pickles, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Italian Dressing & Mild (Or Hot) Pepper Salad) make this sandwich spectacular. It’s their freshly baked bread, a sweet smell the fills the entire deli, that makes the sandwich. Never soggy (even with all of the condiments) it’s crunchy, sweet and the perfect vehicle for of the meaty goodness.
If a meat party isn’t for you, fresh buratta caprese (my sister’s favorite) transforms the classic sandwich into something spectacular.
And of course, if you dare to take the sandwich less traveled, you can make your own — as I did on my most recent visit. A medley of Prosciutto di Parma, Spicy Sopressata, Fresh Mozzarella and the works. Always add the works.
These oversized sandwiches are reminiscent of my hometown Jersey — the classic Italian deli but in the beautiful California sun. If you didn’t know before, now you do. And just like how In N Out Burger is a must on your LA list, Bay Cities needs to be right there with it.
