Half-market, half-cafe, fully delicious. Joan’s on Third is a Los Angeles favorite, causing this city hot spot to even expand to a location off of Third (although keeping the same name). There’s a reason why crowds gather for brunch or lunch, or even a quick bite to go. The food is excellent.
It’s a very “LA” kind of spot with fresh ingredients being the primary focus of each dish. When you first walk inside, a large glass display filled with cheeses and charcuterie tries to steal your attention, especially with a grumbling stomach, but remember the reason for your visit. I need to remind myself that every time I walk past the vibrant colored prepared foods, especially remembering the taste of the delightful brussels sprouts with dates, almonds and manchego. Finally, after drooling over everything else in the market, you find yourself at the register with a petite plastic menu in hand. Each dish seems relatively simple; a fried egg sandwich, yogurt parfait, tomato-mozzarella. But trust your instincts. Go simple. Those dishes prove to be the most exciting.
Grab your plastic number and snag a seat outside (because it’s LA and gorgeous year round). Coffees arrive quickly, followed shortly later with your food.
This elegantly prepared parfait epitomizes Joan’s on Third; the most simple things turn out to be far more complex then you thought. Homemade, slightly sweet granola is layered between raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and tart yogurt. It’s refreshing, and perhaps one of the ‘healthiest’ items on the brunch menu.
Dearest Bacon, Egg and Cheese at Joan’s on Third. What is there to say about you? You are perfect. The soft and sweet, beautifully toasted brioche bun holds together the magical pairing combination of bacon, egg and cheese. Peppery arugula is dressed in the garlic aioli adding a necessary layer of freshness, and creaminess to the seemingly heavy sandwich. It’s fresh, and damn delicious.
Remember that gorgeous cheese you saw in the front of the restaurant that was incredibly tempting? This is the way to indulge in true lunch form. The freshly prepared mozzarella is soft and silky, still slightly watery, in the best way possible, signaling its was just made. Sweet slices of tomato and freshly picked basil topped with extra virgin olive oil are held in place by the crunchy slices of baguette. Simple. Fresh. Amazing.
In LA, after Urth Caffe, Joan’s on Third comes pretty close to being one of the city institutions. It’s a favorite, and for a really good reason. The food is fresh and delicious, making really simple dishes something special.
